Women of: Waterloo
“Women of: Waterloo” is a participatory body of work that reclaims public space to honour and amplify voices of women in Waterloo Street. This tea party projections of people of the community reflect moments of shared laughter and storytelling, through the feminine act of braiding and handling textile.
Through the lens of familiar, everyday acts like conversation, braiding, and textile- often dismissed as idle “gossip” or “women’s work” - we seek to reclaim and reframe these interactions as meaningful exchanges of wisdom, empowerment, and connection.
Ultimately, Women of: Waterloo is an homage to the women of this community - a celebration of their stories, rituals, and relationships - and a call to revalue the intimate, powerful connections women foster when they come together. Through this work, we hope to make space for authentic, intergenerational dialogue, where women’s experiences are centred, honoured, and celebrated.
Special thanks to Janice, the ladies of CityStyle Beauty Salon, Bee Yen, the lovely residents of St. Vincent Home and everyone who participated in the creation of this work.
